Hi-fi mockup of fan-shaped browser tab visualization
This week we’ve started doing some short interviews with people to get some feedback on our design ideas. To better enable this process, we created a hi-fi mockup of our pie viz concept.
If you haven’t read about this particular visualization in our blog before, or even if you have, please give us your feedback in the comments. When you look at it, ask yourself what you think the visualization should do. What do the various visual attributes (size, color, shape) we used mean to you?
Version 1, no lengthening (click for big version with working hover/alt text):
Version 2, with lengthening:
We look forward to getting user feedback on this and our other ideas in our interviews this week, and hope to get some feedback on the blog, too. Thanks for reading!

hi. Have you see my Mozilla Design Challenge entry? http://risherry.blogspot.com/2009/02/mozillas-design-challenge-spring-2009.html uses isometric view to display tabs
Cool! I didn’t have time to submit anything or even read through (there were 40 entries, after all). Thanks for sharing, we’ll check it out.
Almost all of the mockups I see for tab redesigns have this idea of a thumbnail of the page. All run into the same problem–what should the thumbnail look like? If it is a visual representation of the entire page, it is too small to be meaningful. The latest If it is part of a page, what part? I think grabbing favicons might be the best bet. Right now its really hard to tell what the sites are. If you could solve this problem however, it would be a real contribution!

I like the fan-tab idea a lot! Great idea!
To continue with Maureen’s comments, I think page thumbnail is a good choice if more interactions are offered, say, the fan-shaped acts like a clipping mask that allows you to drag the contents around to see other parts in the opened web page. I believe the size of the fan and zoom-out ratio of the page snapshot should be balanced to achieve a good result.

Cool !
this is not only an idea for Firefox, it is an idea for a new OS Starmenu Design.
It is better than Microsoft, Apple, Gnome or KDE

Great idea, really well done, it looks awesome.
) to visualize a part of the browing chronicle.
However, I fear, it does not scale in real-life situations with more than just 4 siblings or even with deeper “trees” (just my opinion).
For our WebReview addon (https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/11315) we chose a (lame) tree view (I admit we had no better idea
Anyway, great contribution!
Nice day!
